The 1994 FIFA World Cup, the 15th staging of the FIFA World Cup, was held in the United States from June 17 to July 17, 1994. The United States was chosen as hosts by FIFA in July 1988. Brazil became the first nation to win four World Cup titles when they beat Italy 3-2 in a penalty shootout after the game ended 0-0 after extra-time, the first final to be decided by penalties.

The average attendance for the tournament was 69,000 while the total attendance was 3.6 million. The 1994 World Cup holds the record for the highest attendance in World Cup history. It was also the highest-attended single sport event in United States history. A Copa do Mundo de 1994 foi sediada nos Estados Unidos, apesar da pouca tradição do futebol no país. A Copa 94 também bateu todos os recordes de público, mantido até hoje. Foi uma copa de surpresas. A Bulgária que até ali em 6 participações anteriores jamais havia vencido um jogo de Copa do Mundo superou grandes favoritos, sendo a 1ª colocada em um grupo que tinha a Argentina, além de eliminar em um jogo emocionante a Alemanha, até então a Campeã mundial, por 2 a 1 nas quartas de final. Outra surpresa foi a Nigéria, com seu futebol ofensivo. Romênia e Suécia também surpreenderam. Os suecos ficaram com o 3º lugar ao derrotar a Bulgária por 4 a 0.As eliminatórias para a Copa de 1994 começaram em 1992 e terminaram no fim de 1993. Argentina, que tinha Gabriel Batistuta, Claudio Caniggia e Fernando Redondo, caiu prematuramente nas oitavas de final, diante da Romênia de Gheorghe Hagi, Florin Răducioiu e Gheorghe Popescu, por 3 a 2. O escândalo do doping de Maradona, expulso do mundial, foi supostamente decisivo para o desequilíbrio do time que vinha bem até então, entretanto, a seleção argentina só havia enfrentado times fracos, e Maradona só havia feito um gol, contra a inexpressiva Grécia. Mas a grande decepção da copa foi a Colômbia. Credenciada por uma implacável goleada contra a Argentina por 5 a 0, pelas eliminatórias, em plena Buenos Aires, os colombianos chegaram aos EUA com status de favoritos. Só que perderam na estréia para a Romênia por 3 a 1 e perderam o rumo na competição. No jogo seguinte fizeram a festa dos anfitriões perdendo por 2 a 1. A solitária vitória sobre a Suíça por 2 a 0 de nada valeu e a seleção sul-americana que voltou a sua realidade de seleção de porte médio. O Brasil, liderado por Romário, dirigido pela dupla Parreira e Zagallo, foi para a Copa de 94 desacreditado pela difícil campanha nas Eliminatórias. Jogando um futebol burocrático, porém consistente em seu sistema de marcação e obediência tática, a seleção canarinho tinha na dupla de ataque Bebeto e Romário sua principal arma. Ganhou da Rússia por 2 a 0, de Camarões por 3 a 0 e empatou com a Suécia por 1 a 1. Nas oitavas ganhou por 1 a 0 dos Estados Unidos em pleno feriado da independência americana. Nas quartas um grande jogo: Brasil e Holanda. A seleção marca 2 a 0 no segundo tempo. A Holanda reage com Bergkamp e Aron Winter; Branco amplia, 3 a 2 e o Brasil volta às semifinais de uma Copa. A seleção canarinho vence a Suécia com um gol de cabeça do baixinho Romário e 24 anos depois está numa final de copa, novamente contra a Itália. Já a Itália, de Roberto Baggio, teve duas fases distintas: uma campanha razoável na 1ª fase, classificando-se somente no número de gols marcados, em um grupo considerado de nível técnico mediano, com seleções do porte de México, Irlanda e Noruega. Na partida contra a Noruega, houve a primeira expulsão de um goleiro na história das copas, que foi o italiano Gianluca Pagliuca; na fase subseqüente, a partir das oitavas, quando eliminou sucessivamente Nigéria, Espanha e Bulgária, todos por 2 a 1, com Baggio brilhando.A final, entre Brasil e Itália, entrou para a história por dois motivos: Primeiro, por fazer surgir a primeira seleção a conquistar o quarto título mundial (ambos os países já tinham ganho três mundiais). Segundo, porque foi a primeira vez que a final de uma Copa do Mundo foi decidida nos pênaltis. O jogo terminou em 0 a 0 no tempo normal e na prorrogação. A vitória do Brasil veio após uma defesa do goleiro Taffarel e um chute para fora dos italianos Roberto Baggio e Franco Baresi. O Brasil recuperava a coroa e conquistava assim o inédito quarto título da copa do mundo, igualado apenas no mundial de 2006, pela própria Itália, que perdeu para o Brasil nesta final de 1994. O grande destaque da copa foi o “baixinho” Romário, que com seus cinco gols e assistências perfeitas, como aquela em que deu à Bebeto contra os EUA, foi o principal nome brasileiro na Copa. Craque, polêmico, galanteador e boêmio, o baixinho brilhou e confirmou a sua espetácular fase vivida então no Barcelona; Na final o Brasil entrou em campo com: Taffarel; Branco, Aldair, Márcio Santos e Jorginho; Dunga(C), Mauro Silva, Zinho e Mazinho; Romário e Bebeto.

* Born on Oct 17, 1970 in Bangalore.

* Tests: 132 matches, 619 wickets at an average of 29.65. 2,506 runs with one century and five fifties.

* Switched from pace bowling to spin very early due to a jerky action and after his debut aged 19 in 1990 quickly became the pivot around which India began dominating home matches on spin-friendly pitches.

* Became only the second bowler in tests to claim all 10 wickets in a test innings in 1999, emulating England spinner Jim Laker, to bowl India to a series-levelling win over Pakistan in New Delhi.

* Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1996. Captain for one one-day match, a four-wicket win over England in 2002.

* The third highest wicket-taker in tests with 619 scalps, behind Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan and retired Australian Shane Warne.

* Retired from one-day cricket last year after India’s first-round exit in the World Cup to finish with 337 wickets at 30.89 from 271 matches.

* Struck his maiden test hundred in the drawn third and final test against England at the Oval in August 2007, scoring 110 not out in his 118th test, the only hundred by an Indian during the 1-0 series win.

* Named test captain in November last year in the twilight of his career ahead of one-day captain and front-runner Mahendra Singh Dhoni to protect the wicketkeeper from the burden of handling too much too soon after Rahul Dravid abruptly quit captaincy.

*One of the finest cricketers India has ever produced, Anil Kumble, retired on November 02, 2008
