BECKHAM: I COULD PLAY FOR GB IN 2012
David Beckham admits he would love to appear for Great Britain in the 2012 Olympic football tournament - if he is still playing.
Beckham, 33, has a contract with Los Angeles Galaxy until 2012 and has not ruled out appearing or even captaining Great Britain’s team at the London Games.
The England midfielder arrived in Beijing today ahead of the Olympics closing ceremony, in which he is playing a leading role in London 2012’s set.
He said: “I will be 37 so I’m not sure I will still be playing. But you never know, at the end of the day I’m just going to be happy to be involved.
“I will definitely be there, but whether it’s playing or not I’m not so sure about that one.”
Beckham said he believed football deserved its place in the Olympics despite the controversy over whether clubs should be forced to release players for the tournament.
He added: “For me, football is the best sport in the world so for me it should be top of the list.
“There are so many other great sports and so many other athletes who have worked so hard to get here, but it’s still important.
“There are great players and great teams over here so it’s still my number one sport, whether or not it is looked at as different.”
Meanwhile Beckham believes Usain Bolt should carry on showboating and said he has been awed by the Jamaican sprinting superstar.
Bolt, who clinched his third sprinting gold and third world record of the Games on Friday night, has been criticised by International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge for showing a lack of respect towards his fellow runners.
But Beckham gave his backing to Bolt saying: “I think he’s great. If you’re that good - and he breezed through all the early stages and then turned it on for the finals, it’s so impressive if you can do that.
“He’s so talented and has got so much confidence. It’s such a big stage and the whole world is watching, so if you can perform like he has then you can gloat - and it’s good to see.”

David Robert Joseph Beckham, OBE (born 2 May 1975) is an English footballer, who plays in midfield. He plays for and captains Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy[2] and is also a member of the England national team. He earned his much publicised 100th cap for England against France in March 2008.[3]
He has twice been runner-up for FIFA World Player of the Year, and in 2004 was the world’s highest-paid footballer.[4] He was Google’s most searched of all sports topics in both 2003 and 2004.[5] Such global recognition has made him an elite advertising brand and a top fashion icon.[6][7] Beckham was captain of England from 15 November 2000 to 2 July 2006. He made 58 appearances as captain, and ended his tenure in that role after the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals. He continued to make contributions for the England national team in 2007 competitions.[8] Beckham captained Manchester United for the first time on 21 October 2000 in a Premiership match against Leeds United, coming on as a substitute for injured team captain Roy Keane. Beckham went on to score a free-kick in this match, which finished 3–0.
Beckham’s career began when he signed a professional contract with Manchester United, making his first-team debut in 1992 aged 17. During his time there, United won the Premier League title six times, the FA Cup twice, and the UEFA Champions League in 1999. He left Manchester United to sign for Real Madrid in 2003, where he remained for four seasons. While at Madrid, Beckham became the first British footballer to play 100 Champions League matches. In his final season, Real clinched the 2006–07 La Liga championship title—Beckham’s only major trophy with the club—in the final game of the season on 17 June. In January 2007, it was announced that Beckham would leave Real Madrid and sign a five-year contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy.[9]
Beckham’s new contract with the Galaxy, effective 1 July 2007, gave him the highest salary of any MLS player in history. He debuted for the team on 21 July in a friendly versus Chelsea at The Home Depot Center,[10] and on 15 August, he had his first start with the team, scoring his first goal in the 2007 SuperLiga semi-final. His first league start then came on 18 August in front of a record crowd at Giants Stadium.[11]
Alongside his career as a footballer, Beckham has gained a signifcant amount of fame and celebrity status through his marriage to former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, leading to various sponsorship deals and advertising campaigns and an estimated joint wealth of £112 million.[12].The couple have 3 sons and currently reside in Los Angeles, California.
