Celeski wins it for Victory
Melbourne Victory have moved back to the top of the A-League table thanks to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Adelaide United in a controversial clash at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Billy Celeski strike in the 84th minute gave the visitors all three points which took them above Adelaide on goal difference - but the main talking point was referee Matthew Breeze’s awarding of three penalties.

The first of those was highly controversial, with Adelaide striker Cristiano appearing to dive when confronted by Victory defender Rodrigo Vargas. Breeze pointed to the spot however, with skipper Travis Dodd keeping his cool to net a twice-taken penalty to put the Reds into the lead on 28 minutes.

Victory earned a penalty of their own 10 minutes into the second half, and this time it was Cristiano who was penalised for a clear block on Vargas. Kevin Muscat stepped up to level the scores from the spot.

On 67 minutes Cassio curled home a stunning free-kick following a foul on Cristiano by Vargas to put Adelaide ahead once again, but with 10 minutes remaining Melbourne earned their second penalty of the night when Even Berger was clipped by Robert Cornthwaite.

Muscat again made no mistake from 12 yards, and soon after Celeski prodded home from close range to seal all three points from a game which may see Cristiano come under scrutiny for his part in Adelaide’s opening goal.

Coach Ernie Merrick said his players had shown true character to come from behind twice and also play so well with so many proven goalscorers on the sidelines, like Fabiano and Archie Thompson.

“We needed to score some goals and risk everything to get back on top of the table,” he said.

“So we decided to lift the intensity and it was certainly one of our best games this season.”
