    Alot of good advice. But that one guy might have missed the boat on the “sounds like U2″ thing. That might be true in business, but in music, sounding like another band has made quite a few people alot of money. Though it’s probably best to try sounding like a few bands at the same time.

    Music is business, and bands sell product the same way as anyone else. His point is not that you won’t move units by being the same, but rather you won’t ever reach the top by copying somebody else. To use another analogy, BK and McD’s both make burgers - they have meat, lettuce, chesse etc - but they aren’t the same.

    They point out the main thing, it is really important to have one thing (at least) different about your business. You can’t compete against a current business, already well established in the market, by making the exact same good with NO difference at all, be it price, where it is made etc. There always has to be something key about what you do, but I guess being original is the hardest part - it is much easier said than done!

    True but Megadeth are Burger King to Metallica’s Mcdonalds but many still enjoy dining out on their thrash. Still wouldn’t mind having a majority shareholding in Burger King or Megadeth.

    Interesting range of perspectives. You can get go a long way copying a successful product or model, but a point of difference is really important.
